Pastor Rick’s September 2018 Message

September has arrived. Time to learn. Even now, Christian education and Confirmation Classes begin.

In Proverbs 9:10, King Solomon wrote, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and knowledge of the Holy One gives insight.” The best of all wisdom is the wisdom of our God.

We believe that Scripture interprets Scripture. In this verse, what comes after the “and” interprets what comes before it. It is like reading a Psalm, where one verse further expounds upon another. So, knowledge of the Holy One of God gives insight, and, is also the object, foundation, and nucleus, of the wisdom of God.

We know that the Holy One of God is Jesus. He is unique, special, and a one of a kinder. He is God who has taken upon Himself human flesh. How this is done, is only known to God. So, we as God’s people stand in awe and marvel at the power and might of our God.

Jesus, as the Holy One of God is also our Savior. Because of our sinful flesh, we can do nothing for the forgiveness of our sins, or our salvation. Because of our sinful flesh, the only thing we can do is to continue to sin by thought, word, and deed. Since there is nothing we can do, Jesus as the Holy One of God, has done everything needed. It was done in His life, His death, and His resurrection. This is the Gospel. It is a stumbling block for the Jews and foolishness and folly to the Gentiles. The wisdom of God is the opposite of the wisdom of man. According the wisdom of man, man must earn God’s love, forgiveness, and salvation. To have all of this provided for man, by God and His grace, is too hard to believe. So, St. Paul, the blessed Apostle writes, “For its by grace that we are saved through faith, and this not of ourselves, it is a gift of God, not of works, so that no one can boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)

A Christian never stands so tall as when they fall down on their knees and bow before our God, focused upon His awesome love, grace, and mercy.

The last part of the wisdom of God is to live according to God’s way. There is more to being a Christian that just head and heart knowledge. It includes living a life according to God’s Word. The way of sinful man is the opposite of the way of our God. If you want to live a blessed life, just try to live your life according to God’s 10 Commandments. He has always promised to bless us when we do, and has never promised to bless us when we don’t, because, they are His 10 Commandments. Also, according to the wisdom of our God, first he tells us what to do in His Word, and then, He gives us the power to do so, through His Gospel. He then blesses us with more blessings than we had before. This is also God’s wisdom.

Have a great September. Pastor Brad Rick
