Lutheran Hour Ministries Special Speaker Series

·       Saturday, January 19, 10:00 to 11:00 AM – A Missionary in Times of Disaster, presented by Dr. Lou Jander: http://www.whatsmissionu.com/speakerseries.asp

Disasters are times of chaos…times of not knowing…times of fear…times of asking why…times of experiencing loss…times of feeling deserted.  Disasters come in all sizes and shapes from the individual event that affects one person to one that affects a very large area…they can be natural or man-made.  We can be a beacon of light to people during these critical times…we can listen, we can pray, we can serve and we can tell.  During this webinar, we’ll hear the personal experiences that come from disasters and the practical ways that we can share the love of Jesus…we can literally be the “hands and feet” of Jesus.

·       Saturday, February 16, 10:00 to 11:00 AM – Prayer: The Foundation for Mission, presented by Rev. Dale Haberer: http://www.whatsmissionu.com/speakerseries.asp

This webinar will look briefly at the nature of prayer.  Prayer is significant because it is the tangible expression of our restored relationship with God that Jesus won for us on the cross.  We have been adopted into the family of God and called to follow Jesus into mission.  These two things being the case, what role does prayer have in my personal life and in the life of the church?  We will look at how Jesus used prayer and what it means for us as we follow him as his redemptive community.

PRISON MINISTRY

Cherokee and Sioux

My knowledge of the American Indian culture is almost none. So I just listened as we discussed issues some of the Indian offenders struggle with during the Work Ethic Camp bible study.
I was again aware of the importance of what is taught to children… right or wrong… because it stays with them seemingly a lifetime.

One young lady shared that she was Cherokee by birth whereas the other American Indians there at the time were Sioux.
This young lady stayed behind after the group left and we talked for a while. She is searching Scripture for answers and is asking God to reveal himself to her. I told her not to give up but to keep on reading and to keep on praying. She will get the answers she’s looking for… in due time. (Matthew 7: 7, 8)
Sometimes I have no answers to some of the questions. The only answer I have is what God says in his Word and I know that to be Truth.

She suggested I ‘Google” Cherokee mythology which I am. As I continue to read and try to understand better what they believe I suddenly realized that I’M READING MYTHOLOGY. Not Truth!  I pray I will be able to convey that fact, gently and with respect.

Please continue to pray for me as I seek to share God’s Word effectively.

JANUARY MESSAGE

This year, the Season of, “Epiphany” starts on Sunday, January 6.  “Epiphany” is a strange word. In one context, it means to have a revelation, or come to an understanding.  So, sometimes, we hear someone say. “I have just had an Epiphany. Now, I finally understand.”

In the spiritual realm, “Epiphany “ means to have saving faith in Jesus Christ as Savior, and in that faith, to also understand, that Jesus is your personal Redeemer, the very Son of God.

In another context, Epiphany is when a King comes to visit, to be in, with, and amongst, His favorite people. When this happens, there is joy and happiness, and a lot of rejoicing, singing, and celebrating. A good example of this is Palm Sunday, when Jesus the King of the Jews, made His Triumphant Entry into the Holy City of Jerusalem. Then, His servants laid down palm branches and sang, “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Glory to God in the Highest.”

When the King of Kings and Lord of Lords comes to be in, with, and amongst His people, He always arrives in humbleness and humility. On Palm Sunday, He arrived riding on a colt, the foal of a donkey. Nowadays, He reveals Himself in the waters of Baptism, the Bread and Wine of Holy Communion, and the words of a common language in the sacred Scriptures.

As the King allows His servants into His presence, it is an act of mercy. In the Scriptures, to have mercy upon another is to have compassion upon them, because they are trapped in a bad situation or circumstance. It is so bad that they cannot set themselves free, and they cannot attend to their own needs.  So, they depend upon another to attend to their needs from the outside. This is having mercy. We, and the world in which we live, could not exist without the mercy of our God. The Gospel Readings appointed for the Sundays in Epiphany will reflect these themes.

So now it time for a few question about you as a servant and Jesus as Your King:

Is Jesus Your King, the One who rules over you and your life, or do other earthly and worldly entities exercise power and authority over you?

Jesus the King always arrives in humbleness and humility. Do you expect to see Him only in His power and might?

Is your King, a God of  love and mercy, or only angry and Judgmental, seeking punishment?

Perhaps it is time to have Jesus as Your King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

Have great January and happy New Year ,

Pastor Brad  Rick
